Catherine Marie Sorensen

Catherine Marie Sorensen, 58, of Providence, Utah, (formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico), passed away after a short unexpected illness on January 12, 2025, at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.

Catherine was born on March 17, 1966, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Michael and Sharon Leonard. At the age of 19 she opened the door to missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gained a testimony of Jesus Christ, was baptized, and has been true to her faith ever since. In 1986 she moved to Utah where she met and married her beloved husband, Kurt Winger Sorensen in the Idaho Falls, Idaho LDS temple. Upon Kurt’s graduation from the University of Utah, they moved to Albuquerque, NM, where they raised their family together.

She lived a full and vibrant life, dedicating her time to serving family, friends, and neighbors. Cathy had a remarkable ability to find connections with strangers and show how small the world really is. Her warmth and kindness inspired devotion and love in those who knew her. While raising her children, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of New Mexico (summa cum laude), and served patients with compassion and empathy. She was a dedicated family historian, researching, gathering, and preparing information to connect families together for over 12,500 individuals in Family Search. She served as an ordinance worker for many years in the Albuquerque and Logan LDS Temples. She was an avid quilter, creating beautiful textile works of art for her loved ones and those in need. She enjoyed traveling to new places, most recently a trip to Japan with Kurt this past October. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, who love her and will never forget her.

She is survived and deeply missed by her husband Kurt, her children Dane (Kelsey) Sorensen, Alyssa Sorensen, Taylor (Chiara) Sorensen, and Christian (Emily) Sorensen, 6 grandsons and 1 granddaughter, as well as her father Michael Leonard and brother Michael (Elisabeth) Leonard. She is currently enjoying closer companionship with her mother Sharon and son Nicolai who preceded her across the veil. 

Catherine will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends. We are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to enjoy her love, friendship, and association again.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 262 Canyon Rd, Providence, Utah. A viewing will be held preceding the funeral at the same location, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Mendon City Cemetery.
