Elinor Ann Hammer Hanson left this earth at 90 years old on December 17, 2023 in her home surrounded by her loved ones.
In the sunny Southern California town of Santa Monica, Elinor Ann Hammer was born to Mable and Wallace Hammer on August 23, 1933. She had three siblings. Her older brother, Norman Floyd Hammer, who passed away on March 11, 2023 when he was 98 years old. Her older sister Virginia Louise Hammer died when she was seventeen of Polio. Her younger brother, Stephen Jay Hammer, was born November 8, 1941.
Elinor had many fond memories of growing up in Santa Monica including going to the beach, camping, and fishing with her family. She was a cowgirl at heart and loved spending time in Eagle Valley, Nevada at the Hackett Ranch where she developed a love for horses and the western life! Elinor loved singing and especially being accompanied by her mother. She enjoyed directing, participating, and performing in musical dramas. She was a member of the Mormon Choir of Southern California. It was during this busy time in her life that she met her future husband, Roy Lund Hanson Jr. (August 12, 1934 - November 10, 2020). She loved to tell the story that she was so busy with drama productions that it took Roy five years to “catch” her. Elinor and Roy were married June 5, 1958 in the Los Angeles LDS temple.
Elinor, Roy, and their family moved from Malibu, California to St. George, Utah in 1973. She loved the red rocks of Southern Utah and loved exploring the area in the old family Jeep. She enjoyed learning about the Native American culture and loved collecting turquoise jewelry - which was her favorite accessory. Mom always had a sense of style and looked like a million bucks no matter what the occasion was and never left the house without her lipstick on!
The family moved to beautiful Providence, Utah in November of 1976. Here they cherished 2 1/2 acres of land that they lovingly called the Hanson Funny Farm. Elinor and Roy planted a garden, built a barn, raised animals - sheep, pigs, a cow, a horse and many dogs, and of course children. They enjoyed the wild life - including elk, deer, pheasants, and even the occasional porcupine and skunk, which would create havoc on the farm. Mom even knew how to rid the of dogs of the stinky skunk smell.
Elinor loved her roses and could be found in her rose garden for hours at a time trimming, planting, and nurturing her favorite flowers. Mom cherished her apricot tree and even invited friends over to share in the harvest. Mom made the best apricot pineapple with cherry jam!
If you were to spend a weekend morning at the Hanson home, you could count on a delicious made-from-scratch waffle breakfast! Mom was famous for her waffle recipe, which was handed down to her from her grandmother. Breakfast always included Jimmy Dean Hot Sausage and homemade applesauce. Mom was also known for her mile-high-apple-pie, her secret rice custard and, “panty cakes!”!
Elinor and Roy loved a good old fashioned parade. They participated in many several parades with their old-car club and often some of their grandkids and neighborhood kids would ride along with them in the parade and throw candy to the crowd.
Elinor was an avid family history enthusiast and loved to tell stories about her ancestors, and often these stories were accompanied by her vast collection of family history photos.
Elinor served and loved all those around her with the brightest smile. In the last few years Elinor lived a simple way of life due to her dementia. The ward family, neighbors and her family all remembered her great kindness throughout her life and helped to make it possible for her to stay in that beloved house until the end. Especially her daughter, Connie, who filled her last years with Swig drinks, Macey’s apple fritters, and of course the constant companionship of her dog and cat. She made a lasting impact on all those who knew her.
