Veda Lorene Mason Greenhalgh passed away quietly at her home in River Heights Sunday morning, January 19, 2025 from illnesses common to old age. She was 81.
Born August 29, 1943 in Parker, Idaho to Floyd Gervace Mason and Veda Arvilla Powell, she was the youngest of five children. The family eventually settled in Egin Bench, Idaho where she spent most of her youth, graduating from South Fremont High School in 1961. There she participated in many activities, including drama, choir, band and student leadership.
Lorene met Orvil Brent Greenhalgh, the friend of her older brother, when she was fourteen years old and they dated through high school before he asked her to be his wife. They married in the Idaho Falls Temple, August 25, 1961 and moved to Logan, Utah. While raising their family, they purchased a home in River Heights, later building a larger home on the same lot, where they lived the rest of their lives. Lorene and Brent were the parents of 7 daughters and 2 sons; she spent many years raising her children and taking care of her home. She took great joy in her family and loved them by giving them many opportunities to increase their talents and pursue their dreams. She was their greatest cheerleader and supporter and never missed an opportunity to watch them participate or perform.
As her children grew older and started their own lives, she returned to work, first as a secretary for the Planning and Zoning department of Cache County and then as the Planning and Zoning Administrator. During that time, she also returned to school, graduating from BYU with a degree in General Studies in 2004. After twenty-one years with Cache County, Lorene retired in 2005. She then dedicated her time to the care of Brent while he was battling cancer. He passed away in 2008.
Lorene was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spent her whole life serving and learning the gospel. She loved children and spent many years in the primary teaching the gospel through music and stories. She loved studying the gospel and enjoyed her study groups and attending church. She had a testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ and spoke of Him often. She also had a deep love of the temple and served as a temple worker in the Logan temple for 60 years, only stopping her official weekly service this last year, as her health declined.
Lorene loved traveling, attending live theater, going out to lunch, reading, eating chocolate and watching her beloved Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods. She was musical with a lovely alto voice, which she used in the ward choir most of her life. She played the piano and loved Christmas music starting in October. She loved to paint. She will be remembered for family dinners, always making breakfast for kids before school, her talent for sewing, her fondness of Christmas and giving gifts and for loving her children, 26 grand-children, and 23 great-grandchildren with her whole heart.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Brent, brother Bill Mason, sister Joan Palmer, daughter Shari Greenhalgh Hawkes, and grandson Jacob Hawkes. She is survived by her brother Gary Mason, sister Sherrel (Bob) Wright and children: Shona Sparks, Tamra Greenhalgh Priestley, Lanai Greenhalgh (Cheska), Angela (Allen) Greenhalgh (Schellhase), Margo (Jason) Tackett, Dyrk (Heidi) Greenhalgh, Kristen (Drue) Scott, and Bryce (Michael) Greenhalgh-Messerly.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Primrose Hospice, Dr. Martin Oates, Meals-on-Wheels and the River Heights 1st ward for their hard work and many acts of kindness. Mom wanted to remain in her home to the end and with the help of these organizations, our family, plus many friends and neighbors, we were able to do so. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel.
