Maurine Webster Merrill Hamilton

June 23, 1931 — March 5, 2025

Providence, Utah

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, and friend, Maurine Webster Merrill Hamilton, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Logan, Utah, surrounded by her family. Maurine was born on June 23, 1931, in Thomas, Idaho to Kenneth and Uarda Mendenhall Webster Merrill. She was the oldest of five children.

While she was young, her family lived in a red boxcar until the home was constructed on the family farm. She lived on the family farm until she attended college at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, where she met and married her sweetheart, Rex Orson Hamilton. They were married on August 29, 1952 in the Idaho Falls, Idaho LDS Temple. They lived in Sugar City, Idaho on a small farm where they had five children: Anette, Ken, LuAnn, Neil and Jay. In 1961 they moved to Providence, Utah and added Clair to complete their family.

Maurine’s love languages were service and gift giving. More often than not, you would find nieces, nephews, grandchildren and even some of their friends living with them at any given time. She was an excellent cook and constantly fed family, friends, and neighbors. Maurine was gifted in sewing and all kinds of handwork, including knitting, crocheting, and quilting. She made countless handcrafted items for each of her grandchildren throughout the years. Every new baby received a special blanket. Many of her family members have denim quilts she lovingly created. When she turned 80, she gifted all the girls in the family with a large, crocheted doily, each taking many hours of loving work to complete. Her hands were always busy in service to others. She loved to garden, and she and Rex spent many spring and summer hours tending their ¼ acre garden. Fall days were dedicated to canning and preserving the abundance from the garden to last the winter. They would preserve more than they could use, so that they could give extras to their children who lived close by and out of state. There was nothing better having a bottle of Grandma’s fruit or veggies for a meal. Her “Grandma Jam” is a family favorite.

Maurine was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many church and service positions during her lifetime. She was dedicated to doing genealogy and spent many hours indexing and tracing family lines. For many years, she and Rex served in the Logan LDS Temple—a service she deeply loved. Later, they served a mission in Suriname from 1996 to 1998. She quickly came to love the other missionaries and people she served there, many of the missionaries and ward members still consider them as Oma and Opa. She baked banana bread and pies each week to feed hungry elders serving alongside them.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, LuAnn; her husband, Rex Hamilton; grandsons, Jared Hamilton, great grandsons Carson Hamilton, and Wesley McConnell; and a brother, Clendon Merrill. She is survived by her siblings: Leon Merrill, DeVota Gardner, Elaine Morehead; her children: Anette (John) Packer, Ken (Gina) Hamilton, Neil (Jeannette) Hamilton, Jay (Diane) Hamilton, and Clair (Lynda) Hamilton, and many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Because of failing vision and a fall, she spent the last 2 ½ years living in Legacy House in Logan, Utah. She quickly came to love the people she met there. She was also much loved by all those at Legacy House who served her and knew her. We would like to thank the staff for their loving care to our mother.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 1:30-2:30 pm with a Celebration of Life following at 3:00 pm in the LDS church at 420 W 100 N, in Providence, Utah. The internment will be at the Providence Cemetery at 925 River Heights Blvd, River Heights, Utah.
